If visiting Scotland for any reason, there is little excuse for not arranging the readily available cheap hire car and heading to the capital.

Visiting the World Heritage site of Edinburgh old town is always a tremendous pleasure. The Old Town area is crowned by the magnificent hulk of Edinburgh Castle looming over the city from its site on the crag formed from the plug of an ancient volcano. The area stretches away to the west, down the steeply sloping Royal Mile to Holyrood House and the ruins of Holyrood Abbey.

This medieval section of Scotland’s cultural centre has kept to the layout of small yards or alleys stretching either sides of the Mile. Wandering among the old stone buildings will bring you many treats, be they shopping, eating, drinking, music, literature or comedy.

The dark alleyways and cobbles are evocative of a dark past, crime was often rife in this part of town and the legend of characters such as Burke and Hare haunt the air.

One happier story from the past is that of Greyfriars Bobby. Lovers of children’s literature and animals will adore the heart warming story or this loyal little dog and following the tale around the old town will give any visitor a glimpse of some of the areas off the famous cobbled main drag.

A poor gardener’s son from Forfar arrived in Edinburgh looking for work in the mid 1800s. For many who worked on the land, work was scarce due to flooding across eastern Scotland and after living in squalor with his wife and son John Gray joined the Constabulary. This promised 13 shillings a week and an apartment off Cowgate, the street running parallel to the Mile one block south.

As a police officer in a rough part of town Gray was required to have a dog. He chose a Skye Terrier; a tenacious, lively shaggy dog, who was the perfect police companion on the night shifts around the markets. Bobby was chosen as the best name for a policeman’s dog.

The harsh winter and outside life of John Gray caused ill health and in 1858 the constable succumbed to tuberculosis. He died with Bobby at his feet but that wasn’t the end of the little dog’s loyalty.

John Gray was laid to rest at Greyfriars Kirkyard, adjacent to Candlemaker’s Row, just a few streets to the south of the castle. Bobby stood guard at the grave, eating with a kind café owner in the nearby Eating House, for the rest of his life. Many residents observed this 14 year vigil and even Queen Victoria heard of the faithful hound and came to visit him at the Kirk.

The Kirk and Candlemaker’s Row can be visited today and a statue at the end of the Row commemorates Bobby and his loyalty to his master. The Eating House bears a plaque proclaiming that the canine companion ate on the premises and an engraved bowl and collar belonging to Bobby can be seen in the Edinburgh Museum on the Royal Mile.

This is just one of the stories of the city’s colourful past but it’s hard to find a more warming tale to follow around the Old Town.

Linda is a freelance writer and bookseller who, following 19 years in IT for a large airline, loves to write about the places she has visited. She also adores her other job as a bookseller in a local bookstore.

Prehistoric men called this land their property before the Celtic tribes of old claimed the land as their own. The Romans, acknowledging the importance of the land invaded it and later on by the Normans Through the centuries, the land now known as as England has collected a history that would rival that of any nation. This is what makes an England trip a special 1 and a ought to for individuals on holidays in Pembrokeshire and staying in holiday cottages UK for their vacation.

Hadrian’s Wall for example is the most well-known destination in northern England and it is rich in historical significance. For 1, it was built in the year 122 which makes it one of the oldest attractions in the United Kingdom. The Wall as it is normally referred to as is a World Heritage Internet site as declared in 1987. Nowadays though, tourists can explore it with complete freedom as it remains unguarded. It is obvious though that vandalism in any form is not tolerated so visiting the remnants of the wall consists of policing your self and others just like you would help in protecting historic holiday cottages UK and other historic sites you can see while on holidays in Pembrokeshire.

Two national parks are developed in this English countryside in between North Yorkshire where there is North York Moors and majority of the Yorkshire Dales. Vales of Mowbray and York lie in between the Pennine Hills in the west and the North York Moors in the east, with Vale of Pickering lying to the south. The apex point is Whernside, located on the Cumbrian border, at 2,414 feet or 736 m. The county is also decorated with four principal rivers, River Ure, River Ouse, River Tees and River Swale.

Several locations attract the visitors egg York Minister, Yorkshire Air Museum, Studley Royal Park, Ampleforth College, Bolton Abbey, Byland Abbey – English Heritage, Bolton Castle, Cleveland Hills, Drax, Fountains Abbey, Light water Valley, Malham Cove, Wharram Percy, Whitby Abbey and several much more.

Only two major motorways pass by way of North Yorkshire and these are the A1 M and the A66 M. M62 motorway also passes by means of North Yorkshire, extremely near to Eggborough. The East Coast Major Line, the North TransPennine and the newly-formed Grand Central London to Sunderland line are the key railway lines that run all through the county. York is the largest station in the county with 11 platforms.

The name Ellesse is derived from Servadio’s initials, becoming LS.

The corporation grew in popularity in the course of the 70s with emphasis on producing skiwear, in certain quilted jackets and ski pants. In 1979 Ellesse’s Jet Pant, which featured padded knees and a wider lower leg so that it would fit around a ski boot, was included in an event at the Pompidou Centre in Paris celebrating Italian style.

Tennis was another key sport in which Ellesse had been closely associated with since its early years and the Ellesse logo itself references the form of a tennis ball and the shape of the guidelines of a pair of skis.

Throughout the 1970s and 80s Ellesse had gained quite a considerable reputation for combining the functionality of sportswear with the styling of street level fashion and were one of the first sportswear brands to feature their logo prominently on the outside of all of its garments. During the mid 1980s when Ellesse actually began to come into the for front of sportswear style, French fashion designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac worked with Ellesse. This was one of the earliest collaborations between a sportswear corporation and a fashion designer.

A lot of renowned sports celebrities, such as those from tennis, endorsed Ellesse including players like Chris Evert, Guillermo Vilas and Boris Becker. Other non tennis associated sports personalities included Muhammad Ali, Natas Kaupas and Maurice Cheeks along with actors and actresses Roger Moore and Brigitte Nielsen.

A UK brand management company by the name of Pentland Group purchased a 90% share of Ellesse for 20 million pounds back in 1994. Even though Pentland bought 90% of the organization they were the Ellesse UK distributor considering that 1981 and founder Servadio retained the remaining 10% share in the business when it was bought by Pentland. They also own other nicely recognized brands such as Lacoste, Berghaus and Speedo. Ellesse lately celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2009 with a party held in Rome in July of 2009.

80s Casual Classics are 1 of a handful of retailers in the UK to be able to stock this 80s retro clothing brand and have helped to contribute to the styling and recent bringing of the brand to the UK. Neil is a fan and collector of Ellesse and even helped with the loaning of some classic vintage originals to Nick Enjoy on the set of his remake of The Firm, with a lot of of these pieces being seen and employed on set.

Earlier this month, officials and heads of the UK travel business announced that it was joining ABTA’s Fair Tax on Flying campaign. The campaign has been presented to the Chancellor, George Osborne, ahead of the March spending budget.

The campaign that calls for the Government to quit rises in aviation tax in the UK, in line with other European countries that have stopped comparable taxes. Other such European countries have stopped aviation tax increases in a bid to stay away from any further negative impact on their own travel business in tough economic times. So why not the UK?

It appears the UK Government is hell bent on continually slapping taxes on the travel business. But, it seems somewhat contradictory given that in actual reality, Prime Minister, David Cameron, said that the travel business was highlighted as 1 of five leading industries for growth.

However, surely, in a bid to make much more of us travel regardless of whether organization or pleasure, surely constant increases in taxes, not to mention fares on the boost due to soaring fuel prices this will in fact deter would-be passengers to travel instead of encouraging them. Therefore, having a negative effect on the business as less and less of us travel. Where will the growth come from then if we avoid travelling as considerably, or at all?

It is quite worrying when, in recent months the travel business has observed a actual boom in travel, right after many years of airlines going bust left, proper and centre and passengers being stranded at residence and abroad. A genuine growth has been reported by key and provincial airports across the country, as nicely as several UK airlines reporting passenger increases. Any unfair tax increases threaten this long awaited growth.

Initial introduced in 1994, Air Passenger Duty has risen by a staggering 2600%! These increases far outweigh those increases in other European countries. From this tax, the Government will expect to raise a staggering £2.2 billion in 2011. If this is not sufficient, by introducing but more increases, by 2015 the Government expect to raise an additional £1.4 billion, taking the total of air travellers’ taxes to over £3.6 billion a year!

The differences in tax values have been calculated and the cost differences for UK travellers verse those travelling in European are hugely, and unfairly several feel, various. The Fair Tax on Flying campaign has identified that a UK family of four flying to Florida will pay aviation tax of £240! If the very same family flew to Australia they would be slapped with a whooping £340 in tax. Even so, our French counterparts would pay a mere £15 to every single of these destinations, whilst an Irish family would pay a minimal £11.

As the travel industry holds its breathe until the spending budget, we all have to hope that the Government will give the travel industry a break. Not just to recover and successfully claw back to recovery but also to be allowed to grow, as Mr Cameron predicts and of course wants!

Occasionally Mr Prime Minister you have to make less profit per obtain to ultimately make a lot more purchases, that then equates to much more overall profit. Not far more profit, but less sales! Fingers crossed…
